IN. THE. HUNT. NEVER SAY DIE. ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE! Ok fine, lets not get carried away at 5-8, but back-to-back wins for the Chicago Bears against division rivals has to count for something. As does an emerging defense led by Montez Sweat. Don't look now, but Matt Eberflus and company are building a case they do indeed have the Bears pointed in the right direction.

On to the grades after Sunday's 28-13 win over the Detroit Lions ...

Winning feels good. Winning when you have lost 12 games in a row in the division feels even better. Somehow, this one still left a slightly bad taste despite the Chicago Bears coming back to win on a game-winning Justin Fields drive.

There was a lot of good on one side of the ball and some improvement needed on the other side. And then there was the coaching.

QB: C

Justin Fields did a lot of good. He started red hot — 12 for 12 for 100 yards in the first quarter. Fields ran for a team high 59 yards. His completed 73 perecnt of his passes, 27 for 37. And, Fields led the Bears down to the Vikings 13-yard line setting up Cairo Santos's 30-yard field goal with 10 seconds left! Well. ...

Maybe this is on me for being stunned at the collapse, but as I sit down to put the grades for week 11 down I am still in a daze.

But, we must forge on like Matt Eberflus and company will this week getting ready for Minnesota and a chance to get to 4-8.

Chicago Bears midseason grades: What do players deserve after a 3-7 start? https://allchgo.com/chicago-bears-2023-mideseason-grades/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=chicago-bears-2023-mideseason-grades https://allchgo.com/chicago-bears-2023-mideseason-grades/#respond Tue, 14 Nov 2023 23:04:03 +0000 https://allchgo.com/?p=98444 We’ve just passed the midway point of the season and the Chicago Bears are in the middle of their second mini-bye, slumping at 3-7.

There has been some good and also a lot of bad. This felt like the right time to take a step back and size up how we got here.

So let’s get to the midterm grades — which of course can be improved with a strong finish to the semester, err season.

QB1 Justin Fields: C

The season started out slow for Fields and the Bears. Some of that had to do with game planning, some with Fields holding onto the ball too long. Three touchdown passes and four interceptions after three games led to the Bears starting 0-3.

Then came eight touchdowns and only one interception in back-to-back games against less than stellar Denver and Washington.

But hope that Fields had arrived once and for all was quickly dashed in a home loss to Minnesota on October 15. He was hurt — holding onto the ball too long will do that — when he was sacked by Danielle Hunter.

We eagerly await his dynamic closing act to 2023.

QB2 Tyson Bagent: B

Backup quarterback fans everywhere grew excited when Bagent completed 13 of 14 passes in the preseason. He built on the hype by winning his first start against the dysfunctional Raiders, executing a conservative game plan.

Bagent showed he could get rid of the ball quickly and operate the offense smoother than his more talented QB room partner.

But Bagent also put the ball in harm’s way, throwing six interceptions and losing two fumbles. Five of those six interceptions came on the road when Bagent was asked to do too much for an undrafted rookie free agent from Division II Shepherd University.

Bagent’s arm strength will continue to be a question mark until he can consistently and safely place the ball down the field. It seems like the Bears have at least found their backup QB can be considered a relative win in this dysfunctional season.

Running Back: A-

The new Bears motto is “whoever runs the ball for us will dominate.” Khalil Herbert started out well then D’Onta Foreman did not miss a beat when Herbert went down with an ankle injury.

The Herbert / Foreman RB1 combo has combined for 639 yards so far. That is more than any one running back with the exception of Christian McCaffrey. Foreman is averaging 4.3 yards per carry, Herbert 5.3.

Whoever is playing quarterback should benefit from the Bears’ stout ground attack.

Wide receiver: C

DJ Moore is ninth in the NFL in receiving yards with 793. He is 14th at 79.3 per game. This is exactly where you thought WR1 would be, somewhere in the middle of the top receivers.

The problem with Moore is that he has leveled out the last five games. Moore has not had less than 44 yards receiving, but has not had more than the 58 he racked up last week versus Carolina.

Darnell Mooney is 112th in the league with only 22 receptions and 82nd in receiving yards.

Chase Claypool is hanging out on South Beach. He has one catch with the Dolphins, three less than with the Bears.

Tight End: A

Cole Kmet not only joined CHGO, but he’s also on his way to career-high numbers in every category. Kmet is fifth among NFL tight ends with 46 catches on only 57 targets. Kmet already has five touchdown catches and numerous eye-catching blocks. His contract extension looks like a steal for Ryan Poles and the Bears.

Offensive Line: B

This has been a roller coaster ride but it feels like the Bears are getting to a better place minus the center position. The Bears are fifth in rushing, 135.1 yards per game but have also given up the fifth most sacks.

Darnell Wright has lived up the 10th overall pick hype. Teven Jenkins got healthy and he’s now seemingly capable of playing both guard spots well.

Larry Borom held his own filling in for Braxton Jones proving he is a capable backup. Nate Davis found his footing after personal issues kept him out to start the season before injuring his ankle.

Center remains the problem. Lucas Patrick is holding the spot down for the rest of 2023. Cody Whitehair should be forever banned from the position. Doug Kramer got cut and is now an Arizona Cardinal.

Defensive Line: D-

There are only five teams allowing more points than the Bears: Broncos, Commanders, Panthers, Giants, Cardinals.

The main reason is the Bears do not get to the quarterback, worst in the NFL with only 13 sacks. That falls on this group. Yannick Ngakoue leads the Bears with 3 sacks. Help us Montez Sweat, you are our only hope.

Linebacker: B

T.J. Edwards is second in the NFL with 112 tackles. He has not been great in coverage, but Edwards has been around the ball consistently. Jack Sanborn stepped in beautifully for Tremaine Edmunds playing the middle. Sanborn has the same amount of solo tackles, 36, as Edmunds in less playing time.

Edmunds has been a disappointment. He is 41st in tackles and has only 3 TFLs. Ask yourself if you can think of one memorable Edmunds play other than a tipped ball that fell into his hands.

Secondary: B

This group has been the Bears strength, but has simply missed too much time due to various injuries. Eddie Jackson has missed half of the season to lead the injured mob. Josh Blackwell has played only 3 games.

Jaylon Johnson, Jaquan Brisker, Kyler Gordon and Terell Smith have all missed multiple games as well.

Only rookie Tyrique Stevenson, Elijah Hicks and Jaylon Jones have been able to stay on the field. Four of the 6 Bears interceptions have come from this group. Good, but defensive coordinator Flus would like more.

Special Teams: A

Cairo Santos has missed one field goal attempt and is 4-4 from 50+. Trenton Gill has done everything right except use a better angle to tackle Ihmir Smith-Marsette. Trent Taylor hasn’t dropped a punt. Patrick Scales deserves credit for his long snapping perfect operation.

How about a fake at some point Richard Hightower?

Coaching: D

The Bears should have at least four wins if not five. The Denver loss is at the top of the list. I am still not sure what the H.I.T.S. principle is since the Bears are dead last in the NFL at -9 taking the ball away.

Getting turnovers would fall under the talent window. Penalties would fall under discipline. The Bears have the third most penalities, 67, and the third most yards due to penalites, 554.

Matt Eberflus does the Bears no favors as the front man for the organization each week with the media. Flus could use some coaching on how to communicate.

A bigger concern is why it took Luke Getsy four games to figure out how best to use Justin Fields. How is this possible?

Getsy recently said the gameplan for Fields and Bagent are basically the same. Again, how is this possible? Fields is one of the most dynamic runners in the history of the NFL. Bagent, a decent athlete, is not.

The Bears continue to play hard, a low bar, but the reason why the staff still gets a passing grade.

Tyson Bagent threw a perfect bomb to Darnell Mooney to start the game. If you asked me at that point whether he was headed to Canton, Ohio or headed to quality backup, I would have chose Canton. Unfortunately for Bagent, the biggest concern that some have wondered about, his arm strength, showed up.

Bagent could have had two touchdown passes had Velus Jones Jr. caught that ball or the ref didn't blow Darnell Mooney's pl...

Chicago Bears game grades: Tyson Bagent’s first day produces a gold star https://allchgo.com/chicago-bears-game-grades-las-vegas-raiders/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=chicago-bears-game-grades-las-vegas-raiders https://allchgo.com/chicago-bears-game-grades-las-vegas-raiders/#respond Mon, 23 Oct 2023 00:05:24 +0000 https://allchgo.com/?p=96929 The Bears won a football game at home on Sunday for the first time since September 25, 2022 — 392 excruciating football days ago. Tyson Bagent made his first-ever NFL start. D’Onta Foreman ran with purpose. The Bears defense looked like an actual defense getting three turnovers and not committing any. There was a lot to like!

With that let’s get to the grades …

Quarterback: A

Tyson Bagent followed the game plan. Bagent found his checkdowns all afternoon long and was able to extend drives on 3rd down with key throws. The Bears finished 8-13 on 3rd down, by far their best conversion rate of the season.

Prior to Sunday, the Bears had not finished over 50 percent on 3rd down conversions in any game. Their previous best was 6-12 against Denver.

The Bears held the ball 8:10 longer than the Raiders controlling the clock. Bagent only threw for 162 yards, but the offense’s efficiency stood out.

QB2 deserved the game ball he received from Matt Eberflus.

Running Backs: A

Welcome to the Chicago Bears D’Onta Foreman. Wow!

Foreman ran through, around, up and over would be Raider tacklers letting Eberflus and company know that he is worthy of more playing time even when Khalil Herbert and Roschon Johnson return. Foreman averaged 5.6 ypc on 16 attempts for 89 impressive yards. Foreman scored 3 times, twice on the ground once through the air showing nifty moves and power to get to the endzone. More D’Onta please.

Darrynton Evans ran hard for 48 more yards and even Tyler Scott picked up 14 yards on a reverse and a motion play. The Bears controlled the clock courtesy of their dominant ground game.

WR/ TE: B

Three receivers caught passes from Bagent along with TE Marcedes Lewis getting one ball, his second catch of the year. DJ Moore made himself available on third down as did Tyler Scott for a key catch across the middle. Moore led all receivers with 8 catches. Cole Kmet did not have a catch nor did Robert Tonyan but that will not last while Bagent remains the QB. The ball should continue to be spread around. This group did not benefit from the Bears conservative game plan.

OLine: C

Too many penalties or this group was in line for a higher grade . Larry Borom was called for holding twice, Teven Jenkins once. Jenkins performed well overall moving back to right guard. Darnell Wright held his own when he was matched up with Maxx Crosby. Lucas Patrick had one of his better games leading with his energy and downfield blocks. There was yet another false start penalty.

DL/LB: C+

The Bears defense looks a lot better, but there is still not enough pressure up front. Justin Jones has been flashing more often and had the lone sack on the day. Gervon Dexter Sr., Zacch Pickens, Yannick Ngakoue and Rasheem Green all finished with one tackle. Tremaine Edmunds was able to grab his first interception as a Bear, 6th overall. Edmunds’ pick led to a short field and the Bears taking a 14-0 lead midway through the 2nd quarter. T.J. Edwards and Jack Sanborn combined for only three tackles, which will never ever happen again for those 2.

Secondary: A-

Jaylon Johnson had a day to remember with two interceptions, including a pick-6. Johnson came into the game with one career interception. He now has three and wants to get paid by the Bears gesturing at Ryan Poles asking for his money. Johnson was also called for pass interference that cost the Bears 46 yards.

Jaquan Brisker led the Bears with 10 tackles. Kyler Gordon got a QB hit on blitz. Tyrique Stevenson acquitted himself well on a number of balls matched up with Davante Adams for a good portion of the afternoon. The secondary remains the strength of the Bears.

Special Teams: A-

Cairo Santos ended his perfect 2023 when he had a PAT blocked. It did not matter at all as the Bears were up 30-6. Santos boomed a 54-yard field goal and has not missed a FG in 322 days dating back to last December against Green Bay. Santos is worthy of team MVP votes.

Velus Jones Jr. did not fumble. Trenton Gill continued to punt the ball efficiently. This group continued its rock solid performance of 2023.

Coaching: B

Luke Getsy created a game plan to win with Tyson Bagent. I would like to see Getsy be more aggressive with the offense but understand the walk-before-you-run philosophy. The Bears committed 9 more penalties for 110 yards which is not apart of the H.I.T.S. principle. Getsy and Eberflus could also made better use of the clock at the end of the first half when the Bears seemed content to go into the locker room up 14-3. Overall, it was a good day for the coaching staff who had a 1-5 team ready to compete.
