Sunday’s 28-13 win over the Detroit Lions at Soldier Field was the team’s second straight win and marks the first back-to-back wins in Matt Eberflus’ era.

Down three points at halftime, the Bears held the Lions offense scoreless in the second half while Justin Fields found DJ Moore for a 38-yard touchdown on 4th-and-13 to take the lead for good in the third quarter.

Here are our initial impressions on the win …

Adam Hoge

What a ride that was. We got the full Justin Fields experience today. All the fun, all the frustration. But the quarterback certainly delivered on Matt Eberflus’ biggest call since he became head coach. I still can’t believe Flus went for it in 4th and 13, but he did and it turned into a 38-yard touchdown to DJ Moore. Will that be the play that launches this team on a big run? Two in a row is at least a start.

Nicholas Moreano

The Bears had 21 days to think about how their first matchup with Detroit ended. 21 days to feel the pain and disappointment from giving up a 12-point lead late the fourth quarter. In this rematch at Soldier Field, the Bears did what they couldn’t at Ford Field and finished the game. In the second half, Justin Fields connected with DJ Moore for a 38-yard touchdown and then on the following offensive drive, Fields scored on an 11-yard touchdown run. The Bears’ defense in the second half forced three three-and-outs, two turnover on downs, one fumble and intercepted Jared Goff. That’s two straight victories and two victories over NFC North opponents.

Will DeWitt

Respect has been earned! That’s the type of performance everyone was hoping the Bears could have. It proved that they really did fail to finish in Detroit and that they can really hang in there with the best in the division. Talk about a strong game from Justin Fields who made some throws and plays to lead his team to this win, the Bears’ first back-to-back victory since 2021. This team looks to be growing right in front of our eyes. It’s okay to feel excited, I am too.

Mark Carman

4th and 13 and Matt Eberflus decides to go for it? Did you think the Flus was going to go down without a fight? Admittedly, I did. Fields found a wide open DJ Moore streaking down the sideline for a 38 yard TD season saving pass. The Bears are officially “in the hunt.”

Greg Braggs Jr.

We saw some bests by the Bears today. Best win of Matt Eberflus’ career. Best play of Justin Fields career (on 4th and 13). Best this defense has looked in five years. Things all of a sudden are looking up for the Chicago Bears? First back-to-back wins in the Eberflus Era. Four winnable games the rest of the year. Dare I say, in the hunt? Why not? The Lions did it last year. Why can’t the Bears do it this year? Why not. Let’s get nuts.

Kevin Kaduk

Could this be the start of a December to remember for the Bears? Their last four games are all winnable and the ingredients the Bears own are really starting to come together. Sunday’s second half was a showcase for an ever-improving defense and the Montez Sweat fan club continues to grow. You’d like to see more consistency from the offense, but let’s enjoy this winning streak while we can.

Chicago Bears vs. Detroit Lions predictions: Can Justin Fields and Co. get their revenge at Soldier Field? https://allchgo.com/chicago-bears-vs-detroit-lions-predictions-can-justin-fields-and-co-get-their-revenge-at-soldier-field/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=chicago-bears-vs-detroit-lions-predictions-can-justin-fields-and-co-get-their-revenge-at-soldier-field https://allchgo.com/chicago-bears-vs-detroit-lions-predictions-can-justin-fields-and-co-get-their-revenge-at-soldier-field/#respond Fri, 08 Dec 2023 21:43:13 +0000 https://allchgo.com/?p=102381 The Chicago Bears probably should’ve beaten the Detroit Lions the last time the two teams met.

Up 12 points with under five minutes to play, the Bears instead collapsed and let Dan Campbell’s crew walk away from Ford Field with a last-minute victory.

Can the Bears get their revenge just three short weeks later? That remains to be seen, though Justin Field and Co. have the advantage of an extended rest as they’re coming off a bye week. They’ll enter this game with a 4-8 record while the Lions sit atop the NFC North with a 9-3 mark.

Here’s how we see this one shaking out …

Adam Hoge (6-6) — Bears 23, Lions 17

These two teams are trending in opposite directions right now and the Bears will have revenge on their mind Sunday at Soldier Field. Have the Lions already peaked this season? I think it’s a fair question. Regardless, this should be another close game and I don’t expect the Bears to give it away again. The Lions haven’t played a true outdoor game since Oct. 22 at Baltimore (I’m not counting Sofi Stadium in Los Angeles). That also happens to be the coldest game they’ve played this season — at 62 degrees. It’s going to be in the 30s and windy at Soldier Field Sunday. Yes, I’m a believer that “Bear Weather” is mostly a myth, but I’ve also acknowledged a couple times when it has helped the Bears win. One of those times was against Jared Goff when he was with the Rams in 2018.

Nicholas Moreano (5-7) — Bears 24, Lions 20

For my last prediction against the Vikings, I wrote that I wouldn’t pick the Bears until “they prove they can finish a game.” Well, the Bears finished against the Vikings, and now I’m taking Chicago in this second matchup with Detroit. The Lions love attacking the middle of the field, and the Bears did a relatively good job of defending the Lions’ passing attack in the first game. That needs to happen again for the Bears to be successful and be more technically sound during two-minute drives. Also, this game should be an opportunity for Fields to show his dual-threat capabilities. The Bears don’t just start a two-game win streak, but a two-game win streak against NFC North opponents.

Will DeWitt (6-6) — Lions 23, Bears 21

I swear it feels like there’s a devil on one shoulder and an angel. One is saying to choose the Bears. The other says the Lions. Now, which is which is up to you. Even though Detroit has been in one-score games every single week since their bye, and the Bears let them off the hook a few weeks ago, I’m personally going to remain in “wait and see” mode when it comes to the Bears’ ability to beat a team like Detroit. Winning two games in a row, let alone back-to-back wins in the division feels like a tall order. If the Bears Defense can pressure Jared Goff and force him into mistakes like last time, and the offense does a better job of making the most of those, then perhaps the Bears will win. I suspect this one will be close and come down to the wire, too. It’ll depend on which team makes the better adjustments between meetings, and during the game itself, which is why I’ll lean towards the Lions this week.

Greg Braggs Jr. (8-4) — Lions 24, Bears 20

My biggest problem with the Bears this season has been adjustments. Or lack thereof. I’m confident the Lions will make the proper adjustments after the Bears took them by surprise for 58 minutes in Detroit. But will Chicago be ready for the counter punch? I’m not so confident with that. Should be cold, which plays a factor in the Bears favor and the defense has been playing well but it feels like the Bears haven’t played in forever since the bye week and the Lions are battle tested. Flus falls short of back to back wins once again.

Corey Wootton (6-6) — Bears 21, Lions 17

Grind em out game. Bears have historically had Jared Goff’s number even back to his Rams days. Defense is hitting its stride. Offensively have the same game plan as last time, but finish the game and control the clock!

Mark Carman (7-5) — Lions 23, Bears 20

Detroit makes more adjustments than the Bears do and hold the Luke Getsy game plan down. Bears keep it interesting but come up short down the stretch.

Kevin Kaduk (7-5) — Bears 20, Lions 19

The Bears have already proven they can hang with the Lions. To win this one, they’ll also need to prove they can put together a good gameplan off an extended break and win two straight games, something they’ve never done under Matt Eberflus. I think they finally get it done, though, kicking off one of the most interesting months we’ll ever see in Bears football.

Jake Flannigan (4-8) — Bears 31, Lions 28

The winning ways continue for a team of destiny?

Chicago Bears vs. Minnesota Vikings predictions: Can Justin Fields and Co. nail down a signature win on Monday Night Football? https://allchgo.com/chicago-bears-vs-minnesota-vikings-predictions-week-12-nfl/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=chicago-bears-vs-minnesota-vikings-predictions-week-12-nfl https://allchgo.com/chicago-bears-vs-minnesota-vikings-predictions-week-12-nfl/#respond Mon, 27 Nov 2023 17:40:58 +0000 https://allchgo.com/?p=101677 The Chicago Bears were four minutes away from completing a win over the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on November 19.

You know what happened next.

Can the Bears put that deflating defeat behind them and rebound against the Minnesota Vikings in front of a hostile crowd on Monday Night Football?

Here’s how we see this wone shaking out …

Adam Hoge (6-5) — Vikings 24, Bears 20

Here’s the thing: I actually think the Bears should win this football game. My gut is even telling me they will. Unfortunately, with the way Brian Flores’ defense is playing, I don’t think the Bears will be able to run away with it, which means we’re likely talking about another close game in the fourth quarter. And until they prove otherwise, it’s foolish to predict them to come out on top.

Nicholas Moreano (5-6) — Vikings 23, Bears 20

After the Bears’ fourth-quarter debacle against the Lions, I made a vow to not pick the Bears again until they prove they can finish a game. This Vikings defense will be a good measuring stick for Justin Fields to see how much he has learned from the first matchup that resulted in him dislocating his right thumb. Bears keep it close but lose another divisional game.

Will DeWitt (6-5) — Vikings 24, Bears 23

It all comes down to our least favorite f-word: finishing. The Bears should be right in this game, especially if they continue to tailor the offense to Justin Fields’ strengths. Even though Joshua Dobbs has been playing well since joining the Vikings, he’s still prone to giving defenses chances. So, the Bears will have chances at creating a few takeaways on Monday night. I expect the Bears to make this game close, but until they prove they can finish games, I’m going to have to take their opponents.

Greg Braggs Jr. (7-4) — Bears 24, Vikings 18

The last time the Bears had a complete meltdown vs Denver, they followed that up with a road win over the Commanders in prime time. I’m going with the same recipe this time. After a complete meltdown vs Detroit, I’ve got the Bears winning a road game on prime time in Minnesota. The Bears should be more prepared for the Vikings blitz and the Bears offensive line is better than it was for their first matchup. And the Vikings don’t have Kirk Cousins this time around but instead Josh Dobbs who’s looked shaky last couple of starts. Add it all together and that equals a Bears win!

Mark Carman (7-4) — Vikings 20, Bears 16

Feels like a Thanksgiving / Lions hangover waiting to happen. Matt Eberflus may have lost at least some of the team after the Lions debacle. Throw in Brian Flores and the Vikings defense presenting the Bears’ continued problems, and you get Minnesota sneaking out with a win.

Kevin Kaduk (6-5) — Bears 34, Vikings 14

The trust level in the Bears are low and for good reason. But despite the late collapse, we saw a lot of good things in the first 56 minutes of the Detroit game and I think they can carry over to Minnesota. The key will be the offense quieting the Vikings fans early … and the defense making sure they stay that way late.

Jake Flannigan (3-8) — Bears 24, Vikings 17

In Justin Fields we trust.

Chicago Bears vs. Detroit Lions predictions: Can Justin Fields’ return help end the NFC North losing streak? https://allchgo.com/chicago-bears-detroit-lions-2024-nfl-predictions/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=chicago-bears-detroit-lions-2024-nfl-predictions https://allchgo.com/chicago-bears-detroit-lions-2024-nfl-predictions/#respond Fri, 17 Nov 2023 16:59:36 +0000 https://allchgo.com/?p=98769 The Chicago Bears haven’t beaten the Detroit Lions since November 25, 2021, a Thanksgiving day victory that was helmed by Andy Dalton.

That was also the last time the Bears have beaten a NFC North opponent, so can the return of Justin Fields help end both losing streaks?

We’ll find out as the Bears return to action after beating the Carolina Panthers on Thursday Night Football. The game has a few different interesting storylines, including the first game against former Bears running back David Montgomery.

Here’s how we see this one shaking out …

Adam Hoge (5-5) — Lions 27, Bears 24

I expect Fields to play pretty well in his return and the Bears to surprise some people. But until they prove they can win in the fourth quarter — Fields included — it would be foolish to pick them to beat the top team in the division on the road.

Nicholas Moreano (5-5) — Bears 27, Lions 24

I’m doing it. The stats and overall directions of both these teams say I shouldn’t, but I’m taking the Bears. These last seven games are so important for Justin Fields and his future with the Bears’ organization — and it starts with this NFC North matchup in Detroit. The Bears’ offense unlocks their deep passing game, and the defense continues its dominance in stopping the run. Bears win their first divisional game since November 25, 2021, which was against the Lions at Ford Field.

Will DeWitt (5-5) — Lions 28, Bears 21

Finally – a game that means something! It’s been awhile since we’ve had one of those around here. If there was a game between now and the rest of the season that the Bears should be motivated to win, it’s this one. Big draft implications on the line. It would be pathetic to lose to the Panthers and hurt the chances of that draft pick becoming the first overall. The Bears need to spread the wealth through the air and stick to their rushing attack this week. Oh, and taking care of the football will help, too! Put some pressure on Bryce Young and force him into a key mistake or two, and the Bears should win this Thursday night matchup.

Corey Wootton (5-5) — Bears 28, Lions 21

The Lions last three games have been inconsistent. The Lions defense has given up a bunch of points while the Bears defense has been stopping the run lately. When you put the pressure on Jared Goff he’s been prone to struggle. This stretch of games is essential for Justin Fields’ career as a Bear. They mix and match the run with play action to take advantage of this subpar defense. Bears UPSET ALERT!

Greg Braggs Jr. (6-4) — Lions 27, Bears 16

A lot for Justin Fields to overcome in his first game back. It’s his first game back in 35 days (5 weeks). He’s still presumably dealing with some amount of pain in his thumb. He’s on the road. It’s in Detroit. I’ll be surprised if Fields can push past all that and lead the Bears to their first back to back wins in the Matt Eberflus Era. But it sure would be nice.

Mark Carman (6-4) — Lions 34, Bears 17

Detroit able to run the ball. Fields has moments of brilliance and moments of rust.

Kevin Kaduk (5-5) — Lions 31, Bears 20

Justin Fields is back, but we’re not sure how that thumb is really feeling. I can’t feel confident picking the Bears when you combine that with the team’s inability to take advantage of byes and minibyes as well as the fact that Matt Eberflus has never won consecutive games while in Chicago. Maybe that will happen in December, but not this weekend.

Jake Flannigan (3-7) — Bears 41, Lions 28

Justin Fields came. Justin Fields saw. Justin Fields conquered. Win No. 4 is the sweetest of the season.

With Justin Fields listed as “doubtful,” it’s looking like Tyson Bagent will be making his fourth straight start for the Bears. Can he even his record at 2-2 or will the Bears give up a valuable win to the Panthers, who currently own the second pick in the draft?

Here’s how we see this one shaking out …

Adam Hoge (4-5) — Bears 20, Panthers 13

Despite all the Bears’ issues, they are a better team than the Panthers, who will be missing Brian Burns and D.J. Chark tonight.

Nicholas Moreano (4-5) — Bears 24, Panthers 17

The Bears’ 24-17 loss to the Saints was disappointing. There is no denying that, but Chicago did turn the ball over five times and commit eight penalties and only lost by one score on the road. The Bears play a cleaner game against a beatable Panthers team, who will be missing their top defensive player in Brian Burns. Tyson Bagent does enough to help the Bears get their third win and second victory on Thursday Night Football this season.

Will DeWitt (4-5) — Bears 24, Panthers 21

Finally – a game that means something! It’s been awhile since we’ve had one of those around here. If there was a game between now and the rest of the season that the Bears should be motivated to win, it’s this one. Big draft implications on the line. It would be pathetic to lose to the Panthers and hurt the chances of that draft pick becoming the first overall. Put some pressure on Bryce Young and force him into a key mistake or two, and the Bears should win this Thursday night matchup.

Greg Braggs Jr. (5-4) — Bears 24, Panthers 13

I don’t care who plays quarterback. I’m picking the Bears to win this week. Why? Because they absolutely HAVE to! This game is arguably the biggest game on their schedule the rest of the year with the draft implications attached to them. Must win! The Panthers and Cardinals are neck and neck as the worst teams in football and the Bears own the Panthers first round pick. I don’t care what you want to do with that pick but Chicago needs it to be #1 for a bevy of reasons. Tyson Bagent looks to get another start on the lakefront. Last time they were at Soldier Field he looked crisp along with a solid run game and they won over a bad Raiders team. Now enters a bad Panthers team. Gotta do the same vs them.

Mark Carman (5-4) — Bears 27, Panthers 10

Party on the lakefront and at Joe’s on Weed Street.

Kevin Kaduk (4-5) — Bears 21, Panthers 13

A must-win game if the Bears want to maximize the value of the pick they’re gettting from Caroina and I think it’ll play out similar to Tyson Bagent’s win over the Las Vegas Raiders, which somehow already seems like a lifetime ago. Will anyone outside of Chicago be searching out Prime for this game?

Jake Flannigan (2-7) — Bears 9, Panthers 3

What I if I told you sometimes you don’t need to score touchdowns to win football games? Bear Down, Chicago Bears.

QB1 returned to practice on Friday afternoon, but is still listed as doubtful so it seems unlikely. That means rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent should get his second straight start on the road, one week after suffering a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

The New Orleans Saints are currently 4-4 and tied for the top spot in the NFC South. They’re coming off a 38-27 win over Indianapolis that snapped a two-game losing streak.

Here’s how we see this one playing out …

Adam Hoge (3-5) — Saints 21, Bears 13

The Saints defense is good and the Bears are beat up. Perhaps the Bears’ defense will get Eddie Jackson back this week, but they might lose Tremaine Edmunds because of a knee injury. Jaquan Brisker is also still in the concussion protocol. The Bears can’t afford to be playing from behind, especially with Tyson Bagent making another start at quarterback.

Nicholas Moreano (3-5) — Saints 27, Bears 17

The Bears haven’t won in the Superdome since 1991. A 20-17 victory over the Saints. It’s been a while, and that streak will continue after this Bears-Saints matchup on Sunday. Tyson Bagent will be making his third-consecutive start, and I see the Saints’ defense taking advantage of a young quarterback and this Bears offensive line. I think Alvin Kamara makes a big impact in this game with his catching ability, and Derek Carr completes some explosive plays with the deep ball.

Corey Wootton (3-5) — Saints 28, Bears 17

Bears struggle to get things going offensively. Sweat will make his presence known, but Bears will still struggle opposite him generating pressure. Same story different game .

Will DeWitt (3-5) — Saints 27, Bears 21

Honestly, it’s one of those games where on paper it’s hard to see the Bears coming away with the win, and they’ll probably end up surprising people and make this game much closer than those on the outside expect. If the Bears can break out on the ground, take care of the football and prevent big plays — they definitely have a shot at winning. I just don’t have faith they’ll put together the complete game needed in order to get it done. But who knows? Perhaps Montez Sweat’s arrival will prove to be a difference-maker right out of the gate?

Greg Braggs Jr. (4-4) — Saints 28, Bears 16

Tyson Bagent had a terrific first start of his career. But it coincided with some good fortune including playing at home and against a backup quarterback in Brian Hoyer. Also having a sizeable early lead will always help as well. Last week, he didn’t have the same circumstances and it showed. Playing on the road is not easy for any quarterback but especially for a rookie undrafted free agent out of Division II. Playing from behind is also the worst case scenario for a team that can’t get into a shootout. And this week it gets even more difficult. A much more hostile environment in New Orleans where communicating at the line of scrimmage is never easy and a much tougher defense with the Saints which will make those windows even tighter for Bagent. I’m definitely curious to see how he bounces back but not confident this is the best environment to do so.

Mark Carman (4-4) — Saints 31, Bears 20

Too banged up against too good of a defense. Bagent magic is kept on ice,

Kevin Kaduk (3-5) — Saints 24, Bears 15

The Saints are right in the middle of the NFC playoff hunt while the Bears’ early lapses have them playing for something less right now. Between their rash of injuries and playing with a rookie QB on the road, it’s hard to see them springing a big upset over that tough Saints’ defense. The best news for the Bears? Drew Brees retired a few years back.

Jake Flannigan (2-6) — Bears 20, Saints 13

Darnell Mooney caught 19 touchdowns during his time at Tulane. Plan on one more Sunday, as he returns to New Orleans. The arrival of defensive end Montez Sweat takes the unit to another level for the road victory.

Nor does it even seem they can come close. One week after managing a win over the Las Vegas Raiders at home, Matt Eberflus’ squad went on the road and were promptly stomped by a Los Angeles Chargers team in desperate need of a win.

The end result for the Bears was a 30-13 loss that dropped their record to 2-6.

The Chargers offense turned the Bears defense into the smallest of speed bumps, scoring the first five times it had the ball. Justin Herbert was 31-of-40 for 298 yards and three touchdowns.

Tyson Bagent and the offense, meanwhile, struggled to stay on the field when they had the ball. Bagent finished his second start going 25 for 37 for 252 yards and two interceptions.

Next up for the Bears is a trip to New Orleans next Sunday. The Saints are 4-4 after a 38-27 win over Indianapolis in Week 8.

Here are our thoughts from Sunday’s game …

Adam Hoge

Put the Bagent-Fields debate aside. If Matt Eberflus wants to keep his job, his defense can’t come out looking awful on national television. You don’t get to play Brian Hoyer every week. Zero pass rush, terrible tackling and undisciplined penalties. The Bears allowed points on the Chargers’ first five possessions. Since he became head coach, Eberflus’ wins have come against Trey Lance, Davis Mills, Mac Jones, Sam Howell and Brian Hoyer. Not exactly inspiring.

Nicholas Moreano

Under the lights on Sunday Night Football, the Bears were embarrassed inside SoFi Stadium. The defense allowed Justin Herbert to complete his first 15 passes and missed plenty of tackles as the Chargers kept extending their lead. Tyson Bagent and the offense had one touchdown scoring drive when it mattered and then a handful of penalties, poorly executed plays and overall dysfunction. Bears showed a national audience why they’re still one of the worst teams in the NFL.

Mark Carman

Outclassed. The improving defense regressed miserably when trying to stop a premier QB. Tyson Bagent threw a bomb to Darnell Mooney that had Bears fans excited and then threw an interception that had them calling for Justin Fields, Caleb Williams or Sid Luckman. Hopefully some Bears fans turned in early to get ready for the work week.

Greg Braggs Jr.

A perfect storm came down on the feel-good underdog story Tyson Bagent on Sunday night. Darnell Mooney is ruled down on the first play of the game when it could’ve easily become a scoring drive had the refs not incorrectly called it down by contact. The Bears needed an early lead to try to slow the game down and play ball control/time of possession. The defense couldn’t stop a nosebleed putting the offense in a spot to keep up in a shootout. Bagent got exposed for the rookie QB he is by throwing a few ill-advised throws, one that led to an ugly interception in the first half while the game was still technically in the balance. All in all, the defense hasn’t beaten a quarterback the caliber of Herbert in the Matt Eberflus Era and the lack of pass rush continues to be the glaring reason why. The next question is, will Justin Fields return to action next week and when/if he does can he do enough for the Bears to not select a QB with one of their two first-round picks.

Kevin Kaduk

The loss isn’t an unexpected one, but it sure would’ve been nice to see the Bears put up more of a fight. The defense’s chances were never going to be great with Elijah Hicks and Duron Harmon, but the secondary’s health still doesn’t excuse the litany of penalties or third-down conversions that haunted them all night. Tyson Bagent was mostly fine, but we’re still a long way from knowing what his NFL future holds.

Chicago Bears vs. Los Angeles Chargers predictions: Can Tyson Bagent move to 2-0? https://allchgo.com/chicago-bears-vs-los-angeles-chargers-predictions-can-tyson-bagent-move-to-2-0/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=chicago-bears-vs-los-angeles-chargers-predictions-can-tyson-bagent-move-to-2-0 https://allchgo.com/chicago-bears-vs-los-angeles-chargers-predictions-can-tyson-bagent-move-to-2-0/#respond Sat, 28 Oct 2023 13:18:44 +0000 https://allchgo.com/?p=97306 Can Tyson Bagent remain undefeated as the Chicago Bears starter?

The rookie out of Division II Shepherd University will have a much tougher challenge in his second week, traveling across the country for a nationally-televised Sunday Night Football date with the Los Angeles Chargers.

With the Bears defense having turned things around these past three weeks, there’s a chance that Bagent and the offense can put up enough points to move to 3-5 on the season. But his offensive line will still have their hands full trying to stop a Chargers defense that includes both Joey Bosa and former friend Khalil Mack.

Here’s how we see this one shaking out:

Adam Hoge (2-5) — Chargers 23, Bears 20

My gut is telling me the Bears will win this game. My head is telling me they need to prove they can win two in a row before I assume they can do it. The good news? I’ve been terrible at these predictions all year

Nicholas Moreano (2-5) — Chargers 27, Bears 24

The Chargers have a talented roster and have lost some close games this season. Against the Dolphins, Titans and Cowboys, the Chargers have lost by a combined eight points. The 31-17 loss to the Chiefs last week was the Chargers’ one game that got away. The Bears are not the Chiefs, and even though I think Tyson Bagent can have an efficient day on offense, it will not be enough to overcome all the defensive playmakers: Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa and Derwin James Jr.

Corey Wootton (2-5) — Chargers 28, Bears 21

Bears can’t generate enough pressure on Justin Herbert and stop Keenan Allen. Khalil Mack has a monster game against his old team

Will DeWitt (3-4) — Bears 24, Chargers 21

I’m not guzzling the Bears kool-aid, but I’m definitely giving it a sip this week! The team really has turned things around in multiple key categories, and as long as they continue along this track, they’ll be right in this game. Sprinkle in some complementary football and that right there equals a win on Sunday night. Their first time winning back-to-back since 2021.

Greg Braggs Jr. (3-4) — Chargers 27, Bears 17

I just have a hard time believing the Bears can go on the road with the same recipe as they did in their win last Sunday at home. I expect the Chargers to box it in on defense, defend the underneath routes and quick passes and force Tyson Bagent to throw downfield more. And while the Bears defense has turned a corner they have yet to beat a quarterback the caliber of Justin Herbert. Hope they prove me wrong but I think the Bears lose and Matt Eberflus is still looking for his first two-game winning streak as a head coach for the Chicago Bears.

Mark Carman (4-3) — Bears 31, Chargers 23

All aboard the Bagent Train and ride it! All in, It’s the choo choo. Can’t wait for Sunday night!

Kevin Kaduk (2-5) — Chargers 21, Bears 13

Tyson Bagent and the Bears are free to prove me wrong again for the second straight week. The defense has been improved, but Justin Herbert is a step up from some of the quarterbacks that unit has excelled against lately.

Jake Flannigan (2-5) — Bears 27, Chargers 24 (OT)

The Chargers D struggles to stop the run game and Bagent also makes them pay through the air. It’s a tight one, but in the end a Santos kick wins it in overtime.

And they have a couple of backups to thank for it.

D’Onta Foreman carried the ball 16 times for 89 yards and two touchdowns while adding another score through the air. Rookie Tyson Bagent looked more than serviceable in his first NFL start, completing 21-of-29 passes for 162 yards in a turnover-free game for the Bears.

The victory was the first for the Bears since beating the Texans on September 25, 2022, a span that lasted 10 games. The team is now 2-5 as they head to Los Angeles to play the Chargers on Sunday Night Footbal.

Adam Hoge

Shoutout to Luke Getsy for a great game plan. From the very start, he called plays that negated Max Crosby and he stuck to the run game. That made life much easier for rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent, who was making his first NFL start. Bagent managed the game and then some, looking calm and confident the entire way. He certainly did not look like a backup quarterback. And of course the defense did their job too. Brian Hoyer was inaccurate all day, but Matt Eberflus’ unit continues to trend in the right direction.

Nicholas Moreano

Tyson Bagent played within himself. He didn’t do too much and executed the game plan to the best of his ability. He got the ball out on time and distrubted the ball to his playmakers. Eight Bears caught a pass. The rushing tandem of D’Onta Foreman and Darrynton Evans ran for over 100 yards. Foreman scored three touchdowns. Most importantly, the offense played relatively clean. No turnovers, and Bagent was only sacked twice despite Maxx Crosby staring him down all game. The defense made it difficult for Brian Hoyer and Aidan O’Connell to move the ball through the air, and the defense finished with three interceptions. Tremaine Edmunds got Hoyer first, and then Jaylon Johnson sealed the game with his pick-6. Johnson later intercepted O’Connell, too. The Bears played a complete game on all three phases and secured their second victory of the season.

Mark Carman

Never a doubt. I’ll admit I didn’t have the Bears routing the Raiders on my prediction sheet. Live and learn. Bears were 8-12 on 3rd down — and that was the Bagent impact in his first start. On to the Chargers we come.

Greg Braggs Jr.

Efficient day all around from the Bears. Tyson Bagent epitomized efficiency on a day where he made all the simple throws and let the players make the plays after the catch. The run game was consistent and efficient. The coaches stuck with it all game and it paid off. The defense kept everything Hoyer was throwing in front of them and Tyrique Stevenson + Jaylon Johnson battled all day with Devante Adams. Which resulted in 2 INTs for JJ, including a pick 6 which will help his argument at the negotiating table. The Bears hadn’t won a home game in 392 days. That streak is finally over. Next step, let’s see if Flus and the Bears can actually have their 1st winning streak in his tenure as head coach. Beautiful day across the board in Chicago. It’s just nice to win one.

Will DeWitt

Have yourself a day, D’Onta! Foreman really stepped up for the Bears and was key in this victory! Kudos to the Bears’ defense for stopping the run, stepping up on third down, forcing turnovers and making life difficult for the Raiders all game long. I didn’t expect Bagent and the Bears to win this one, but I’m glad they did.

Despite recording an encouraging victory in Washington just 10 days ago, the Chicago Bears couldn’t bring any of the good ju-ju home to Soldier Field.

The end result was a 19-13 loss to a Minnesota Vikings squad without Justin Jefferson. But what’s worse is the uncertain health status of Justin Fields after the quarterback left the game in the third quarter with a hand injury.

The Bears are now 1-5 with the Las Vegas Raiders coming to town next weekend.

Here are our initial reactions to Sunday’s loss …

Adam Hoge

Maybe the Bears need to play all their games on short rest without a real practice. They’re apparently better that way. From the sack on their first offensive play and the offsides on their first defensive play, it was obvious they weren’t ready against a vulnerable Vikings team. The Justin Fields injury is brutal, and unfortunately, he did it to himself by taking two unnecessary hits on back-to-back plays. Depending on the severity, it could leave Ryan Poles in a very tough spot with major decisions to make at the quarterback position.

Nicholas Moreano

The Bears got us again. After an explosive offensive performance against the Commanders, Chicago looked absolutely lost against Minnesota at Soldier Field. The Bears knew the Vikings were going to bring the blitz, but the Bears had no answer for Brian Flores’ defense. Justin Fields was forced to leave the game with a right hand injury in the third quarter, but even had he been able to play, there was no evidence from earlier in the game that he would’ve made a difference in the end. Tyson Bagent sparked some energy with his 1-yard touchdown run, but Bagent also had two turnovers in the game, with his lost fumble leading to a Vikings touchdown. The Bears are the Bears, and everyone knows that is not a good thing.

Mark Carman

You can’t say it wasn’t entertaining albeit extremely frustrating. Fields hand injury clouds the season in a nightmare way for Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus. Tyson Bagent showed he deserves an opportunity to show what he can do while Fields is out.

Greg Braggs Jr.

Run. The. Ball.Too many times does this Bears coaching staff go away from what’s working. In the first half once they are right at the goalline and the run game got you there, you go away from it. On 2nd and 1, you throw a screen. When your division 2 quarterback is attempting an improbable comeback, you get a big first down, 2 minute warning is approaching and you dial up a bomb to the end zone? Run. The. Damn. Ball. Same problem I had during the Tampa game. Do what’s working. This coaching staff continues to get in their own way. Injuries are mounting, too. Nate Davis goes out early with an injury. Eddie Jackson reinjures his foot. But no injury more important than the apparent wrist injury to Justin Fields. How long will he be out is the question. If it’s for an extended period of time Bears fans will be back to where they were last year. Tank watch. Let’s hope he’s back soon. If not, the seasons more toast than it already is.

Kevin Kaduk

What a disaster. The Bears opened the door on their season a smidge with last Thursday’s win over Washington, then made sure it was closed shut after returning 10 days later against the Vikings. If Justin Fields is out for any period of time, it’s going to be a long and slow slog to Week 17. Ugh.

We’ll find out on Sunday, when the Minnesota Vikings come calling to Soldier Field. The Vikings are also 1-4, but coming off a loss to the Chiefs last Sunday.

The Bears, meanwhile, finally injected some good vibes into their season with a 40-20 road win over Washington two Thursdays ago. They have some key defensive players returning to the lineup and a Justin Fields-led offense that has put two straight good games together. Can they win their first game at home in over a year and end a lengthy losing streak in the NFC North?

Here’s how we see this one shaking out …

Adam Hoge (2-3) — Bears 31, Vikings 21

We’ll certainly learn more about the Bears this week. Are they really a team that could improve as the season goes on? Will Justin Fields continue improving as he has the last two weeks? The answer to those questions should be yes. And if they are, the Bears should probably win this game, despite being 2.5-point home underdogs.

Nicholas Moreano (2-3) — Bears 24, Vikings 17

The Vikings are not the same without Justin Jefferson. Plain and simple. Even though Minnesota has other playmakers in T.J. Hockenson and Jordan Addison, Matt Eberflus can still play his defensive scheme without having to tilt coverages to a particular direction. Offensively, the Bears as a unit need to trust their eyes and be prepared for the pressure the Vikings will bring all game. Explosive plays will help against the blitz. Bears extend their winning streak to two games and get their first division win since Nov. 25, 2021.

Corey Wootton (2-3) — Bears 31, Vikings 28

Bears have found their groove offensively and Justin Fields and DJ Moore continue to shine. Darnell Mooney has his coming out party this week. Defensively it’s going to be a lot easier without Justin Jefferson. Bears must be able to stop the rushing attack and TJ Hockensen.

Will DeWitt (3-2) — Bears 24, Vikings 17

No Justin Jefferson, no problem? Obviously there’s much more at play than the Vikings’ star receiver being out, but it will significantly help the Bears’ chances. Did you know the Bears have scored the eighth-most points per game over the last three weeks? Here’s to the offense remaining hot. If so,  back-to-back wins for the Bears are in our future.

Greg Braggs Jr. (2-3) — Bears 24, Vikings 20

In a sloppy game with some fortuitous fumbles that help give the Bears a couple short fields and enough to hold on for the win late. Kyler Gordon makes his presence felt in his first game back from injury and the Bears keep moving in the right direction

Mark Carman (3-2) — Bears 27, Vikings 24

it is not a mirage. It is real. Justin Fields has arrived to a new level. Eight touchdowns and one interception that last two weeks turns into 11 touchdowns and 2 interceptions after three games.

Kevin Kaduk (2-3) — Bears 31, Vikings 23

There’s a part of me that thinks the Bears are setting me up for disappointment once again, but no Justin Jefferson, a healed defense and a home crowd should tip the scales their way on Sunday.

Jake Flannigan (1-4) — Bears 34, Vikings 17

After more than a full calendar year, the Bears say goodbye to a franchise worst nine-game home losing streak. Two teams trending in opposite directions create a massive mismatch in favor of Da Monsters of Da Midway. An aerial attack from Justin Fields sends Soldier Field into a frenzy. The defense plays a big role in a one-sided affair from start to finish, forcing four turnovers in a wet one.

Matt Eberflus’ team made it look easy in the first half and difficult in the second. But in the end, Justin Fields and DJ Moore finally did what Ryan Poles envisioned when he traded the No. 1 pick for the No. 1 wide receiver last spring.

Fields threw eight passes to DJ Moore for 230 of his 282 passing yards and connected for three touchdowns at FedEx Field.

The end result: A 40-20 Chicago Bears victory and the end of a 14-game losing streak.

Everyone enjoy this one.

Adam Hoge

Good for Justin Fields. Seriously. He wasn’t perfect, but he was more than good enough to build on last week’s performance. And get this… he technically leads the NFL in touchdown passes (granted, only two quarterbacks have played five games so far).  Both Fields and Kirk Cousins have 11 passing touchdowns. DJ Moore was unbelievable. The Bears have a real No. 1 wide receiver — finally. I’ll give them a little bit of a pass for the somewhat sloppy second half. It’s not easy icing the game without a running back. As for the defense? Well, Bears fans are going to have to continue to hang onto their butts the rest of the season.

Will DeWitt

Good for the Bears! You know this team feels a tremendous weight lifted from their shoulders — and honestly I do too getting to watch that. DJ Moore looks like the best wide receiver in Bears history with that outrageous outing. Credit to Chicago for starting fast and hanging in there down the stretch with Washington fighting back and the rash of injuries. All of this on a short week, too!

Nicholas Moreano

It finally happened. The Chicago Bears won a football game. The drought ends at 14. It’s finally over. Justin Fields built off his productive day against Denver and threw for 282 yards and four touchdowns against the Commanders. DJ Moore had 230 yards, three touchdowns on eight receptions. The Bears do need to figure out why the first half and second half are polar opposites of each other, though. The Bears in the first half put up 27 points and held the Commanders to just three. In the second half, the Bears scored 10 and gave up 17 points. But the Bears can work on those corrections and have extra time to do so after a much-needed victory.

Mark Carman

That is back-to-back games that the Bears offense has looked like an NFL offense. Still need to work on that second half, getting tight thing but we have progress for the quarterback and the coaching staff. Reminder, it a longggg NFL season and the Bears have a lot of winnable games on their schedule.

Greg Braggs Jr.

The Chicago Bears did tonight what they’ve always been capable of. The offense displayed the last two weeks is what they’ve always been capable of. Why did it take so long for the coaches and players to execute that? There are plenty of reasons. Lack of adjustments to start the year. No emphasis on preseason reps. Injuries. Whatever it is, put it in the past. You have winnable games going forward. Win them. You have a Quarterback who looks to be unlocked. Keep unleashing him! You have a WR that is a true #1. Throw it to him! The Bears are playing football now. Rip off the rearview mirror in your car and never look back. Feels good to win one. Keep winning more. Bear Down.

Kevin Kaduk

Really wish the Bears could’ve held on against the Broncos because 2-3 wouldn’t look so bad, but that’s gotta be water under the bridge. There’s still 12 games to go and the Bears must get to work figuring out how to keep their offense firing at the level they saw in the first half.

Though our rafters aren’t packed with banners, we’ve been blessed with a surplus of standouts when it comes to the fields, diamonds, courts and rinks in Chicago. We can lay claim to the arguable greatest of all time in any sport and our lone Super Bowl champion featured five Hall of Fame players with a sixth on the way. That’s not even mentioning all of the Hall of Fame-bound Blackhawks who helped the team to three Stanley Cup titles in the last 13 years or the quartet of Cubs who led the team during the 60s and 70s.

While ranking the top 25 all-time Chicago athletes is an impossible task, we decided to go ahead and try anyway. There weren’t a lot of hard and fast rules, but we did limit it to pro athletes. Championships mattered. Numbers mattered. Cultural impact mattered.

We’ll be releasing the names of five athletes per day with the top five being unveiled on Friday, September 1. And while we’re pretty sure you’ll be able to guess who’s atop the list, the journey to No. 1 is going to be a fun one as we debate our picks on social media. Make sure you’re locked into our Twitter, Instagram and YouTube accounts for more CHGO Ranks content this week!

Now onto the Top 25 all-time athletes in Chicago sports history!

25. Candace Parker

As we’ll see later in CHGO Top 25 all-time athletes, being a hometown hero can matter. The bulk of Candace Parker’s WNBA success came in Los Angeles with the Naperville native winning two league MVPs (2008, 2013) and a ring with the Los Angeles Sparks in 2016. But here’s why she’s on this list: When she signed with the Sky as a free agent before the 2021 season, it was because she was viewed as the missing piece to a potential title run. Parker responded by returning home and immediately helping the franchise to its first-ever world championship. Parker’s incomparable stature in the history of Illinois high school hoops cements her spot on this list.

24. Richard Dent

An eighth-round draft pick in the legendary 1983 Bears draft, the Sack Man showed up in Chicago and made it his mission to smother as many quarterbacks as possible. He finished his Hall of Fame career with 137.5 sacks with 17.5 of them coming during a then-record 1984 season and another 17 during the 1985 Super Bowl year. Over a 10-year period from 1984-1993, Dent recorded at least 10 sacks in eight of them. He remains the only Super Bowl MVP in Chicago history.

23. Dan Hampton

The fourth overall selection in the 1979 draft, Dan Hampton was there from beginning to end as the Chicago Bears’ defense rose to prominence in the 1980s. He was also one of the biggest — if not the biggest — reasons for its success as the double teams he drew consistently opened opportunities for his teammates. All of Hampton’s 12 NFL seasons came in a Chicago Bears uniform and he earned All-Pro first- or second-team status in six of them. And while it’s crazy to imagine that “Danimal” could’ve been any better, the 10 knee surgeries that he endured introduce a slight “what-if?” element to his career.

22. Tony Esposito

There have been a lot of great netminders to stand between the pipes at Chicago Stadium and the United Center, but no one did it as well — or for as long — as the great “Tony O.” Esposito was a true NHL pioneer with his butterfly style putting him near the top of the list for the NHL’s greatest goaltenders ever. He won the Calder Trophy for the league’s best rookie after the Hawks swiped him from Montreal and then picked up three Vezina trophies over his career as well. He later made new generations of fans as a Blackhawks ambassador with his gentlemanly style making him a fan favorite during the Blackhawks dynasty era.

21. Ron Santo

Few Chicago athletes were as beloved as Santo, who manned the hot corner at Wrigley Field for 14 seasons and the broadcast booth for another 20. While the Hall of Fame shamefully overlooked him until after his death in 2010, Chicagoans knew just how valuable of a third baseman he was, making the All-Star team nine times and laying claim to five Gold Gloves. He also hit 342 career homers and hit .300 with more than 30 homers in four different seasons. Santo did all of this while battling diabetes and his work raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation was unparalleled. While Ernie Banks will forever be known as “Mr. Cub,” no one quite lived and died for the team like Ron Santo.

20. Minnie Minoso

The period between the 1919 Black Sox and the 2005 World Series team was largely fallow, but one of the true bright spots in the franchise’s history has been Minnie Minoso. The native Cuban was a perennial All-Star outfielder for the White Sox in the ‘50s and ‘60s, renowned for his all-around play in both the field and at the plate. A trailblazer in every sense of the word, Minoso was the first Afro-Latino player in Major League Baseball player. He was not only the first Black player in White Sox history, but the first in a long line of star Cuban players to excel at the corner of 35th and Shields. He remained an excellent ambassador for the game long after his career and was posthumously recognized by Cooperstown with induction in 2022.

19. Derrick Rose

Two Chicago Bulls players have won the NBA MVP award. One is Michael Jordan. The other is Derrick Rose, who in 2011 became the youngest player in league history to win the award at 22. While Rose’s impact on Chicago may be lost on future generations, the Simeon product was a force of nature for his first three seasons, playing an electrifying brand of basketball and leading the Bulls franchise out of its prolonged post-Jordan funk. While his heartbreaking knee injury in the 2012 playoffs will always lead any description of his career, the fact remains is that only one Chicago basketball player ever eclipsed what Rose did in his first three seasons and you’re going to find him at the top of this list.

18. Billy Williams

Spending all but two of his 18 seasons on the North Side, Billy Williams earned his “Sweet Swingin’ Billy from Whistler” nickname by swatting 462 career home runs. His 392 homers with the Cubs are the third-most in franchise history (behind a couple of sluggers who may show up on the list later this week). A six-time All-Star, a two-time NL MVP runner-up and the 1961 NL Rookie of the Year, Williams was a mainstay on the late ‘60s-early ‘70s Cubs that put together six straight winning seasons for the first time since the ‘30s. Williams still shows up around Wrigley Field, helping everyone remember a true Cubs legend.

17. Devin Hester

While this list is full of dominant athletes, how many could flip the entire course of a game in less than 10 seconds? How many started the biggest event on the planet with a 92-yard kickoff return after a week of the opposing coach saying he wouldn’t think of kicking to him? While Hester never made a true impact at wide receiver, there’s no denying he was one of the most dangerous weapon that a Chicago team has ever had at its disposal and his 20 career touchdown returns are proof positive of that. It’s only a matter of time before his bust is resting at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

16. Ferguson Jenkins

While others have arguments, the greatest pitcher in Cubs history is Jenkins. Even Pat Hughes said it himself at Jenkins’ statue dedication last year. In his 10 seasons on the North Side, here’s some of what he accomplished: 53.6 Wins Above Replacement (FanGraphs, most by a pitcher in franchise history), 2,038 strikeouts (most), 2,673.2 innings (third-most), 29 shutouts (fourth-most), 167 wins (fifth-most), three All-Star selections and the 1971 NL Cy Young Award. That’s not to mention the fact the he even played for the Harlem Globetrotters for a few years in the ‘60s. Getting his statue at Wrigley Field was long overdue, but Jenkins is in the upper echelon of Chicago athletes.

15. Duncan Keith

Chicago loves its defenders and it didn’t take long for the city to fall in love with Duncan Keith. Though Keith loved to avoid the spotlight in the dressing room, he never hid on the ice and ate a mountain of minutes each night while serving as the team’s unstoppable motor. His return in Game 4 of the 2010 Western Conference Finals after losing his front teeth was the stuff tall tales are made of and he was the biggest reason the team won its third Stanley Cup in 2015. A two-time Norris Trophy winner, Keith stands alone in a franchise that has had its fair share of excellent d-men.

14. Brian Urlacher

It’s been 38 years (and counting) since the Chicago Bears won Super Bowl XX. Is there any doubt that the best player in all of these long years in between was No. 54? Urlacher was drafted out of New Mexico in 2000 and immediately became a game-wrecker by winning the Defensive Rookie of the Year award. The linchpin of Lovie Smith’s vaunted Cover 2 defense, Urlacher also won the 2005 Defensive Player of the Year award and led the defense to the franchise’s second Super Bowl appearance. A Bear from the beginning of his career to the end, Urlacher was an eight-time Pro Bowl and a four-time first-team All-Pro.

13. Ryne Sandberg

The Cubs acquired Sandberg from the Phillies before the 1982 season, and the trade is now considered both one of the best in the former’s history and one of the worst in the latter’s. In his 15 seasons with the Cubs, Sandberg earned 10 All-Star nods. His nine Gold Gloves and seven Silver Sluggers — both the most of any player from either Chicago baseball team — solidified him as a two-way star. His 1984 season, which included not-soon-to-be-forgotten “The Sandberg Game” and earned him the NL MVP, led the way as the Cubs reached the postseason for the first time since their 1945 World Series appearance. One of the most celebrated players in franchise history, the Hall of Famer is one of the biggest stars in Chicago sports history.

12. Bobby Hull

Until Michael Jordan came along, no one in Chicago Stadium history quite made the crowd rise to its feet like the Golden Jet. An unparalleled goal score, Hull recorded the first 50-goal season in NHL history and seeing him go end-to-end with the puck was a sight to behold. Hull led the league in scoring on three different occasions, won two league MVPs and 604 of his 610 NHL goals came while wearing a Blackhawks sweater. While Hull made an effort to positively connect with many fans off the ice, serious allegations of domestic violence in his personal life damaged his reputation with many other Chicagoans.

11. Sammy Sosa

Few Chicago athletes captivated the city — and, frankly, the entire country — like Sosa. From 1993-2004 (spanning 12 of his 13 years with the Cubs), nobody hit more home runs than Sosa’s 537 or had more RBIs than his 1,389. “Slammin’ Sammy” hit 66 homers in 1998, trailing only Mark McGwire’s 70 in the race to set the single-season record, and he won that year’s NL MVP. Sosa went on to slug 63 in ’99 and 64 in ’01, giving him the most 60-plus home run seasons in MLB, period, and his 609 career homers (including 545 with the Cubs) rank ninth all-time. He also earned seven All-Star nods and six Silver Sluggers and played a major role on the ’03 team that nearly ended the then 58-year pennant drought. The end of Sosa’s Cubs career and PED allegations damaged his relationship with the organization, but the mark he left is undeniable.

10. Stan Mikita

Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith may have led the Blackhawks to a dynasty, but no one represented the franchise longer or better than the late Stan Mikita. Playing all 22 of his seasons in Chicago, Mikita scored 541 goals and notched 926 assists while winning two Hart Trophies for league MVP and four Ross Trophies for the scoring lead. Mikita was named to the NHL’s 100th anniversary team and will always remain the standard when it comes to humble superstars in Chicago.

9. Dick Butkus

Look up “old-time football” in the dictionary and you’re likely to find a picture of the entire Green Bay Packers line trying — and failing — to stop Dick Butkus. While the Bears have featured a long line of all-time great linebackers, Butkus still manages to stand alone for his ferocity and talent while playing for his hometown Bears. The Chicago Vocational and University of Illinois product won two Defensive Player of the Year awards (1969 and 1970) and he was named first-team All-Pro in more than half of his seasons. He was also named to the NFL’s 100th anniversary all-time team and has remained in the sport’s popular imagination for over 60 years.

8. Gale Sayers

Younger Chicagoans had Derrick Rose as their what-if story. Older Chicagoans have the great Gale Sayers. Had he remained healthy, it’s very possible Sayers would be even higher on this list. As it were, he put together a Hall of Fame career that left him among the greatest to ever carry the football. In just seven seasons, Sayers was named first-team All-Pro in five of them. He also led the league in rushing twice and set an NFL record with six touchdowns in one game against the 49ers at Wrigley Field. THE NFL’s rookie of the year in 1965, he was also named to the NFL’s 100th anniversary all-time team in 1965.

7. Scottie Pippen

Is Pippen too low here at No. 7? You can certainly make the argument. The Robin to MJ’s Jordan — and oft upset at that comparison — Pippen was the only other Bull to collect six rings during the ’90s. “Pip” was a two-way player who could play most any spot on the floor, long before that became the norm with the NBA’s top players. Though Pippen never won big without Jordan, the same can be for the reverse. Pippen was a member of the NBA’s Top 50 team in 1996 and of course made the Top 75 team in 2021. Staying on the bench during Toni Kukoc’s gamewinner in 1994 hurts his cause a little, as does his recent run of jealous gripes toward Jordan. There’s still no question we would love to get back in a time machine and watch Pippen show everyone how it was done.

6. Jonathan Toews

Toews set the standard for leadership in Chicago and left the Blackhawks last spring as the longest-tenured captain in franchise history. He was also an absolute force on the ice, playing a two-way game that set the standard and tone for his Stanley Cup-winning teammates. He won the Conn Smythe in 2010 as the team won its first Cup in 49 years and was given the Selke Trophy as the game’s best two-way forward during another Cup-winning year in 2013. He finished his Hawks career with 372 goals and 511 assists. It’s only a matter of time until his No. 19 reaches the United Center rafters and he’s given a spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

5. Patrick Kane

The Blackhawks organization has been so loaded with great players that it’s hard to pick someone to be at the stop. You could make a great case for Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita or Jonathan Toews. But at the end of the day, the distinction lies with Kane, the greatest American-born player in NHL history and also the most physically gifted of the four. Though small in stature, Kane fulfilled the promise that he brought as the top pick in the 2007 NHL draft. He played 16 seasons with the Blackhawks, scoring 446 goals and 779 assists while filling his trophy shelf with three Stanley Cups, a 2013 Conn Smythe Trophy and the 2016 Hart Trophy. Oh yeah, he also scored the overtime goal that broke the Hawks’ 49-year Stanley Cup drought and landed on the NHL’s 100th anniversary team a few years later. A unique player with a surplus of talent, drive and confidence, we’re not likely to ever forget watching Kane play.

4. Ernie Banks

It’s only right that Banks is the top Cub on this list. He was first black Cubs player, the first player to have his number retired by the franchise and a first ballot Hall of Famer in 1977. Throughout his 19-year career (all with the Cubs), Banks earned 14 All-Star nods, a Gold Glove in 1960 and back-to-back NL MVPs in 1958 and ’59. His 512 career home runs are tied for the 23rd-most of all time and he’s among only 28 players to join the 500-homer club. Banks’ squads didn’t experience much success — he actually holds the major league record for most games played without a postseason appearance at 2,528 — but he never lost his love for the game. His “Let’s play two!” attitude is the ultimate example of that. Despite his career ending over 50 years ago, there will forever be only one “Mr. Cub,” and he deserves a spot among the all-time great Chicago athletes.

3. Frank Thomas

Want to pick your jaw up off the ground? Go take a look at Frank Thomas’ Baseball-Reference page. The Big Hurt was an absolute terror for pitchers in the ’90s, looming over curve balls and hung sliders like the football player on the loose that he was. Thomas hit 521 homers in his career and retired with a .301 career average to take his rightful spot as one of the greatest right-handed hitters in history. He also did it the right way, slugging with power and never getting tied up into any of the steroid use allegations that plagued his era. He won the AL MVP award in 1993 and 1994 and should have won it in 2000 ahead of Jason Giambi. Thomas was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2014.

2. Walter Payton

If this were a list of the most beloved athletes in Chicago sports history, Sweetness would take the top spot. Even though it’s been almost 25 years since his death, Walter Payton remains such a large presence on the Chicago sports scene that it’s still hard to believe he’s gone. Payton first joined the Bears in 1977 and was often the only reason to tune into some bad Bears teams as he piled up yard after yard against overmatched defenses. Payton ran his way to the NFL career rushing record with a humble approach, simply tossing the ball to officials after touchdowns and treating his teammates with respect. The epitome of what a football player should be, Payton is an inner ring NFL Hall of Famer and the greatest Chicago Bear of all time.

1. Michael Jordan

Did you really expect anyone else? The GOAT would top many greatest athlete lists not limited to our immediate geographical area and there’s probably no chance we’ll ever see anyone like him again. While we had to share him with the rest of the world, only one city can say they had a front-row seat to the legends that MJ wrote on a nightly basis at the Chicago Stadium and United Center. We were truly blessed for those 13 seasons with Michael Jordan and have the six rings to prove it. Now excuse us while we go watch The Last Dance for another time.
